Season of Migration to the North

Tayeb Salih · 1966 · Sudan

A Sudanese narrator returns home after studying in Europe and encounters Mustafa Sa'eed, whose life in Britain has left a trail of desire, violence, myth, and damage.

Notes and Misconceptions

The Heart of Darkness reversal is useful but too easy. Salih examines colonial fantasy, masculine performance, revenge, and unstable return.

The novel resists clean moral positioning. That is its strength.

Best Path

Postcolonial classics, colonial encounter, unreliable narration

Reading Paths

  • Unreliable Selves

Narrators and protagonists who turn memory, faith, desire, illness, and charm into evasive machinery.
