The Pillow Book

Sei Shōnagon · c. 1000 · Heian Japan

A sharp record of aristocratic life at the Heian court: gossip, taste, etiquette, irritation, beauty, rivalry, weather, clothing, rank, and social intelligence.

Notes and Misconceptions

Treating the book as delicate or decorative badly undersells it. Sei Shōnagon is funny, proud, observant, and sometimes brutal.

It is not a diary in the modern sense. The structure is closer to a curated mind: lists, scenes, judgments, memories, and social codes.
